While the Los Angeles Dodgers figure to make changes to their roster at the MLB trade deadline, they also can expect reinforcements from injured list, with Corey Seager among those expected to make a return.
Seager suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal in his right hand when he was hit by a pitch on May 15. The Dodgers were relieved by Seager not requiring surgery, but manager Dave Roberts estimated he would still be out upwards of two months.
Seager began to make progress toward returning before the All-Star break, only to start experiencing some soreness in his right hand as the level of activity increased. A subsequent bone scan revealed the fractured had not fully healed yet.
Now after more time has passed and Seager began playing in games at Camelback Ranch, he is on track to possibly be activated during this weekend’s series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“That is still the timeline,” Roberts said. “What day sort of depends on the training staff, but I do see him activated this weekend.”
With Seager potentially joining the Dodgers straight from Camelback Ranch, it will amount to not joining a Minor League affiliate for an official rehab assignment. Roberts had previously indicated it was something the team had been giving consideration to.
Whenever Seager is ready to come off the 60-day IL, the Dodgers will need to make moves on their 40-man and active rosters.
Betts, Seager would provide boon
In addition to Seager making progress toward returning this weekend, the Dodgers also expect to welcome back Mookie Betts. He was placed on the IL on Sunday, with it backdated to July 22, and is therefore eligible to be reinstated for the series finale against the Diamondbacks.
