Dodgers News: Will Smith Regrets Throw To Third Base In Loss To Marlins

The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped a second consecutive game to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, falling 2-1 in 10 innings. It was L.A.’s league-worst eighth loss in extra innings this season.

On a night where offense was at a premium, the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Will Smith singled home Cody Bellinger.

The Marlins eventually tied things up in the bottom of the sixth after a ground ball got under the glove of Gavin Lux, allowing Starling Marte to score with two outs.

It remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the 10th inning. Blake Treinen was one out away from sending the game to the 11th, but a wild pitch and subsequent throwing error by Smith paved the way for Marte to score from second base.

“I thought I actually picked it, saw it squirting away and when I got to it I saw Marte halfway,” Smith said. ‘Make a good throw and he’s out. In hindsight, probably should not have thrown it. But yeah, it happens.”

While Smith’s error wound up costing the Dodgers, the club could also look back at several missed opportunities that attributed to their second straight loss. L.A. went just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 13 on base.

“Offensively, we had several men on and we could’ve pushed more runs across, which would’ve been nice,” Smith said. “And yeah, just a couple mistakes at the end, ball got through the infield for them to score. We didn’t capitalize when we should’ve.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts agreed with Smith that the team had several chances to put the game away before the error in the 10th inning. “That play ended the game, but it certainly didn’t lose the game,” Roberts said. “We had many chances to win that game.”

Roberts not happy with Dodgers defense in series with Marlins

Through the first two games of their series with the Marlins, the Dodgers uncharacteristically have committed three errors and overall look sloppy on the field. “Not good,” Roberts said of the team’s defense.

“I think that the little things certainly are not critical the end all the context of winning baseball games, but we’re just not doing well. And when you give teams extra outs, extra bases, it’s tough to win a big league ballgame.”
