The Los Angeles Dodgers officially reinstated Tony Gonsolin from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Yoshi Tsutsugo was placed on the 10-day IL with a right calf strain, and Scott Alexander was transferred to the 60-day IL in order to add Gonsolin to the 40-man roster and activate him.
He had been sidelined since April 4 (retroactive to Opening Day) because of right shoulder inflammation. “It was kind of at the end of Spring Training. I thought it was just normal soreness,” Gonsolin explained of the injury.
“I hadn’t really felt sore before that, so I thought I just had a little soreness or whatever. Tried to throw on it and it was really acting up during that. Then it just kind of got a little worse from there and felt a lot more uncomfortable.”
Gonsolin was temporarily shut down before being cleared to play catch and advance to a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City. “It felt kind of like I went through Spring Training again,” he said.
“Having to build up again and go through that process was a little different the second time coming off the injury, but I feel good and I’m ready to get back out there.”
Tsutsugo yet to find traction
The Dodgers claimed Tsutsugo off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on May 15 and were confident he could get back to the level of hitter seen in Japan. That’s yet to come to fruition, however, as Tsutsugo has continued to struggle against velocity.
He’s collected just three hits in 25 at-bats over 12 games with the Dodgers thus far.
Alexander timeline
Alexander has been on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation since May 6 (retroactive to May 3). He’s 0-2 with a 2.31 ERA, 3.92 FIP and 0.69 WHIP in 13 games this season.
On Tuesday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts estimated Alexander would not return until the final week of June or first few days of July. Wednesday’s paper move means Alexander is not eligible to be activated until July 2. He’s
