With the Los Angeles Dodgers facing the San Francisco Giants for the first time at Dodger Stadium this season, it meant the chance for Jake McGee and Alex Wood to receive their 2020 World Series rings.
The same previously held true for Dylan Floro, and presumably will apply to Joc Pederson as well when the Chicago Cubs visit Chavez Ravine in late June. Former Dodgers are being given their rings during a private ceremony that has seen several players join president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and manager Dave Roberts in the mini reunion.
As McGee and Wood received their World Series rings in the interview room at Dodger Stadium, the likes of Austin Barnes, Joe Kelly, Clayton Kershaw, Corey Seager, Blake Treinen and Justin Turner.
Last season was Wood’s fifth with the Dodgers, but a second stint. He returned to the team prior to the 2020 campaign on a one-year contract with the goal of winning a championship in L.A.
Wood’s season didn’t go as planned, with an injury costing him a spot in the starting rotation. Wood nevertheless wound up playing a key role out of the bullpen come the playoffs. He wasn’t active until the National League Championship Series, but wound up pitching to a 1.35 ERA across four October appearances.
One of those was two perfect innings in the decisive Game 6 of the World Series.
McGee was released by the Colorado Rockies and joined the Dodgers shortly before Opening Day last year. He appeared in 24 games and like Wood, was saw action in the NLCS and World Series.
Muncy laughs about exchange with Wood
During the first inning of his start in the series opener, Wood drew the ire of Max Muncy due to his quick tempo.
“That’s one of the things that’s part of Woody’s game. He’s very quick with his delivery. It helps make him very effective,” Muncy said. “He’s got really good stuff and then he does that on top of it. I didn’t feel like I was ready at the plate, so I got time.
“It was just a little exchange. I don’t know if you saw me smile, but as I was talking to Curt, it was all almost just because it was Woody. Getting fired up just because it was him. It was kind of fun out there.”
Muncy later hit a home run off his former teammate.
