The Los Angeles Dodgers took another series and became the first team in baseball to 10 wins this season by defeating the Colorado Rockies behind more offensive production from Justin Turner and Zach McKinstry.
Turner was part of the Dodgers stressing Rockies starter Jon Gray early, as his RBI single single gave L.A. a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Gray was the victim of an inconsistent strike zone, perhaps no more so than during Gavin Lux’s at-bat.
A clear strike was called for ball rather than ending the inning, and Lux wound up working a long at-bat that ended with a sacrifice fly to left field. Turner then extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0 in the third inning with a home run to left-center field.
Turner’s drive landed in the new Home Run Seats at Dodger Stadium, where a fan failed to make a catch and instead saw the ball land in his order of nachos. Cheese splattered on the fan’s jacket, which the Dodgers replaced. Turner also sent over a new order of nachos.
“I felt bad,” he said after the win. “I’m sure it was not a $2 plate of nachos, so I wanted to replace them.”
The Dodgers’ 3-0 lead held until the fifth inning, when Dustin May ran into some trouble and it led to the Rockies scoring a pair of runs. L.A. squandered their own opportunities after that, though McKinstry provided insurance with an opposite-field home run.
McKinstry and Turner are tied for the team lead in home runs (three) and RBI (11). The rookie started in right field but finished the night playing second base.
Kenley ‘angry’
Spotted with a 4-2 lead, Kenley Jansen entered in the ninth inning for his first appearance since a dominant effort to complete a sweep of the Washington Nationals on Sunday. Jansen’s velocity initially was down and his command lacked.
He issued a leadoff walk but bounced back to strike out the next three batters. Jansen wore a scowl on his face throughout the entire inning and acknowledged after the win he is keeping upset with himself.
“You’ve got to be angry,” Jansen said. “Enough is enough. … It’s Kenley versus Kenley. That’s how I see it.”
