The Los Angeles Dodgers had at least 12 hits in each of their first three games against the Colorado Rockies, and though the series finale was a different story, they won a third consecutive game.
Austin Gomber labored in his Rockies debut as the southpaw only managed to get through three innings due to a high pitch count. Gomber began the game by walking Mookie Betts, then throwing the ball into center field after fielding a comebacker.
After a walk loaded the bases, Betts scored on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks brought in another run, and Gavin Lux’s sacrifice fly extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0 despite the team not collecting a single hit in the first inning.
To Gomber’s credit, he did navigate through traffic in both the second and third innings. But by then Julio Urias had settled into the longest start of his career.
Urias retired the first eight batters faced before giving up a two-out single to Gomber, then set down nine in a row. The Rockies put two on with two outs in the sixth inning, though Urias got Trevor Story to fly out.
He started the eighth inning but gave up a single to Ryan McMahon, who later scored when Jimmy Nelson allowed a two-run double. The one run did nothing to dampen Urias’ outing, as he had complete control of his fastball and an effective changeup.
“I think the changeup was plus, the fastball was dynamic, he was first pitch strikes, there was a log of swing and miss,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He and Will were synced up today. Really fun to watch him compete and get into that eighth inning. All the way around, fantastic.”
Will Smith provided insurance in the eighth inning with a solo home run. It marked the Dodgers’ first homer of the season that cleared the fence.
Turner extends on-base streak
Justin Turner was back in the lineup after being given a night off, and though he went hitless, drew two walks. Turner extended his on-base streak to 34 games, which is the longest active stretch in the Majors.
