Dodgers In No Hurry To Activate Julio Urias Off Disabled List

When Kenley Jansen was placed on the 10-day disabled list because of an irregular heartbeat, manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the domino effect could involve accelerating Julio Urias’ rehab assignment.

After all, the organization had already made the decision to bring Urias off the 60-day disabled list as a relief pitcher. That would not require as much time for the young lefty to condition his arm.

Roberts later backtracked on that sentiment a bit, and Urias remained on an odd schedule with his rehab assignments. He pitched again Tuesday, remaining with the Dodgers’ High-A Rancho Cucamonga affiliate.

Though there once was an inclination to speed up his return, Roberts said the club will not rush Urias, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

“We’ll bring him when he’s ready,” said Roberts. “Don’t question the head. He’s just got to log appearances and I still think that we have time. And then we’ll see by performance. We have time. He’ll come when he’s ready.”

Urias now has made two starts for the Arizona League Dodgers and three with the Quakes. Prior to Tuesday’s outing, he was scheduled to log two innings then face one batter in the third, but only went 1.1 innings last week.

At this juncture, it would be a surprise if Urias is reinstated from the disabled list before active rosters expand on Sept. 1. Whenever he returns, Roberts is intrigued by and excited over the 22-year-old contributing out of the bullpen.
