The Los Angeles Dodgers altered their original plan for Hyun-Jin Ryu and had him start Tuesday night for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He initially was penciled to pitch for Double-A Tulsa on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Ryu stretched out to 71 pitches over the targeted five innings, and allowed one run on five hits in his second rehab assignment. He finished with three strikeouts against zero walks.

Chris Owings’ one-out single in the first inning was followed by Christian Walker’s RBI double that gave the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate) a 1-0 lead. Ryu stranded a two-out base hit in the second inning and a pair of singles in the fourth.

He retired the side in order in both the third and fifth innings.

Ryu exited with Oklahoma City trailing 1-0, and took the loss in what finished as an 8-2 defeat for the Dodgers’ top affiliate.

Next for the southpaw presumably is a third rehab start that will see him log six innings of work. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the organization was hopeful for a steady buildup with Ryu prior to activating him off the disabled list.

Ryu has been out since April due to a severely strained groin. The initial timetable didn’t have him back until some point after the All-Star break. Los Angeles is in a position of strength and depth, as their starting rotation is largely in good health.
