The Los Angeles Dodgers front office had a busy day on Tuesday ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline, acquiring second baseman Brian Dozier from the Minnesota Twins and reliever John Axford from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Being buyers at the deadline shows a tremendous amount of confidence in your club’s ability to go for it and win the World Series this season, and now the rest is up to the players beginning Tuesday night when they host the Milwaukee Brewers.
Walker Buehler gets the start on the mound for the Dodgers and is looking to bounce back from a rough start against the Phillies last week in which he gave up five hits and five runs in 4.2 innings while striking out five and walking one in a loss.
Overall in 12 games (11 starts) this season, Buehler is 403 with a 3.92 ERA, 3.34 FIP and 1.10 WHIP. He has 64 strikeouts compared to 14 walks in 62 innings of work.
The rookie has fared much better at Dodger Stadium than on the road this season, posting a 2.97 ERA in 36.1 innings at home compared to 5.26 in 25.2 innings away from the friendly confines of Dodger Stadium.
Opposing Buehler is Brewers left-hander Wade Miley, who faced the Dodgers on July 20 in Milwaukee. He turned in a very solid performance in that outing, allowing just four hits and one run (zero earned) in six innings.
Miley has made just five starts with the Brewers this season but has been phenomenal pitching to a 2.01 ERA, 3.97 FIP and 1.39 WHIP. He only has 12 strikeouts compared to 13 walks in 22.1 innings though. He has faced the Dodgers 14 times in his career (13 starts), going 3-5 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.
While Dozier should slot in as the team’s everyday second baseman and leadoff hitter beginning on Wednesday, he will not be arriving from Minnesota until around 8 p.m. PT, so he is not in the starting lineup. His Dodgers debut could come in a bench role though if Dodgers manager Dave Roberts calls his number late in the game.
The Brewers also made a big move just ahead of the deadline, acquiring infielder Jonathan Schoop from the Baltimore Orioles. He is not in the Brewers lineup on Tuesday either, but it will be interesting to see how they configure their infield once he gets on the field with Travis Shaw and Mike Moustakas.
