Dodgers Video: Julio Urias Reflects On 1-Year Anniversary Of Undergoing Shoulder Surgery

An international signing out of Mexico in 2012, Julio Urias quickly established himself as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ top pitching prospect before long. The then-teenager dominated at various Minor League levels before earning his long awaited promotion to the Majors in 2016.

After making his MLB debut that year, Urias went on to appear in 18 games during the regular season before taking the mound twice in the postseason. His seamless transition left many wondering what the left-hander could accomplish over a full season of work.

Urias looked to build on a promising start to his Major League career in 2017, but injuries got in the way, as he tore the anterior capsule in his left shoulder and shortly after underwent season-ending surgery.

On the one-year anniversary of undergoing the operation, Urias shared a photo of himself on Instagram laying on a hospital bed prior to the procedure, reflected on his long road to recovery, and offered a glimpse at his delivery:

Hoy cumplo 12 meses saliendo de la cirugía con muchos sentimientos, coraje, tristeza, frustración y miedo, ahora 12 meses de aprendizaje con toda la fe en Dios y en mi familia, siempre creyendo en mi y sobretodo trabajando duro y nunca rendirme..cada vez más cerca! #nevergiveup @dodgers 💪🏽

While Urias hasn’t appeared in a professional game in over a year, he has made significant strides in recently throwing off a mound for the first time since he suffered the injury.

Urias has advanced to throwing bullpen sessions, but a return to game action is far from imminent. Nevertheless, the now 21-year-old has been encouraged with his rehab process.

Assuming he continues progressing, Urias could conceivably return to the Dodgers in the second half of the season. He was originally slated for a return in July, but that no longer appears to be the case, as the Dodgers want to make sure Urias is completely healthy before activating him off the disabled list.
