Ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Los Angeles Dodgers have recalled reliever Pedro Baez from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Tony Cingrani on the 10-day disabled list with a shoulder strain.

Baez was not away from the club long as he was just optioned on Wednesday to make room for Caleb Ferguson on the 25-man roster. The plan was for him to go back to Oklahoma City and work through some issues, particularly against left-handed hitters, but the injury to Cingrani in Wednesday night’s loss changed those plans.

Baez has appeared in 28 games for the Dodgers so far this season, going 2-3 with a 3.25 ERA, 3.37 FIP and 1.59 WHIP while striking out 35 compared to 16 walks in 27.2 innings. The 5.2 walks per nine innings is the highest in his career by a large margin.

Baez has actually pitched better the last month after posting a 4.50 ERA in the first month of the season. He lowered that to a 2.63 ERA during May and has pitched two scoreless innings so far in June.

Cingrani left Wednesday’s game with the shoulder injury after walking the first batter he faced. This is his second stint on the disabled list so far this season due to an arm injury.

Cingrani has appeared in 27 games so far this season, yielding a 4.84 ERA, 1.99 FIP and 0.99 WHIP. He has struck out an impressive 36 batters while walking just five hitters in 22.1 innings.
