Dodgers Injury Update: Hyun-Jin Ryu Might Soon Throw Off Mound

Hyun-Jin Ryu has failed to remain healthy since making a combined 56 starts through his first two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He missed all of 2015 after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, and made just one start the following year.

Considering the shoulder and elbow surgeries he’d undergone, Ryu went into last season facing plenty of uncertainty. He twice was placed on the disabled list due to hip and ankle contusions, respectively, and pitched in 25 games (24 starts).

With an offseason that allowed him to train rather than rehab an injury, Ryu went into the 2018 season feeling healthy and optimistic he’d contribute. That was holding true until the southpaw suffered a groin injury against the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 2.

The strain was so severe that Ryu was said to have torn the muscle off the bone, and he was projected to be sidelined until after the All-Star break.

One month removed from the injury, Ryu is headed to Camelback Ranch for continued rehab and he may soon resume throwing off a mound, per J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group:

Pitchers Hyun-Jin Ryu (groin) and Kenta Maeda (hip) will travel to Arizona to receive treatment when the rest of the team flies to Denver.

Ryu continues playing long toss and “should be getting off a mound soon, which is exciting,” Roberts said.

Ryu went 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA, 3.12 FIP and 0.87 WHIP in six starts before landing on the disabled list. He’s one of three members of the starting rotation currently sidelined, and Clayton Kershaw may again find himself inactive.
