Justin Turner’s pinch-hit two-run home run off Brad Hand tied the game in the ninth, but Pedro Baez surrendered a walk-off home run to Yangervis Solarte in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 6-5 loss to the San Diego Padres in the first game of the doubleheader.
Wilmer Font made his Dodgers debut in the fifth and worked around a leadoff walk to complete a scoreless inning. He also walked the first batter in the sixth, but didn’t get through unscathed.
Cory Spangenberg doubled to put two on, and Jabarai Blash followed with an RBI single. Hector Sanchez’s RBI groundout tied the game with two outs, and Font was removed after walking Manuel Margot.
Edward Paredes needed 10 pitches but struck out Carlos Asuaje to strand two runners. A walk in the seventh, this time issued by Josh Ravin, again came back to cost the Dodgers.
Myers hit a go-ahead triple to left field, which saw an awkward attempt by O’Koyea Dickson, and Spangenberg’s RBI gave the Padres a 5-3 lead.
Clayton Richard faced immediate trouble as Logan Forsythe, Austin Barnes and Kiké Hernandez hit three consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out in the first inning. Bellinger’s RBI groundout gave the Dodgers an early lead, but Richard limited the damage to just one run.
Bellinger struck again in the fourth by leading off with a solo home run to break a tie. Chris Taylor delivered a pinch-hit double and later scored on Barnes’ second base hit of the game to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead at the time.
Richard wound up getting through six innings, with three runs allowed on eight hits, and four strikeouts against three walks. Craig Stammen followed with two scoreless innings before Hand was unable to convert the save in the ninth.
Turner was put in position to tie the game thanks to Rob Segedin’s leadoff double. The pinch-hit home run was the fifth of Turner’s career.
Brock Stewart struck out three and retired the first five batters faced. He preserved the Dodgers’ lead in the second inning despite issuing back-to-back walks with two outs.
A walk and single led to the Padres tying the game in the third on Asuaje’s sacrifice fly. Stewart only allowed the one run but battled a high pitch count, issued four walks and struck out five in four innings.
