A few months back the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres were unable to conclude a three-game series because of inclement weather. The rainout was just the third in Petco Park history since the stadium opened in 2004.
The game was rescheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday, which further added to a difficult stretch for the Dodgers. In what began with the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, they’re in the midst of playing 17 games in 16 days.
With a day-night doubleheader on the horizon, it left the Dodgers facing a pitching decision. Clayton Kershaw is expected to come off the disabled list Friday to start the series opener, and Alex Wood is on track to be activated for the finale.
Yu Darvish was earmarked for the 7:10 game on Saturday, and the final piece to the puzzle will be Brock Stewart taking the hill in the afternoon matchup, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced, via Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times:
The Dodgers will call up Brock Stewart to start the day game of Saturday’s doubleheader against San Diego.
Stewart appeared in three games during the month of August and allowed nine runs on 10 hits and in 7.1 innings (11.05 ERA), while striking out five and walking seven. Overall in 10 games (four starts) with the Dodgers this season, he’s yielded a 3.38 ERA, 4.84 FIP and 1.29 WHIP across 24 innings of work.
Stewart proved to be a valuable weapon as a reliever this season, which was the role he first held upon returning from a shoulder injury that cut Spring Training short. The right-hander tossed 16.2 innings in seven games (one start) with only five unearned runs allowed.
He then was charged for at least two runs in his last three games (two starts). Stewart owns a 3.12 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.
