Dodgers News: Luke Farrell Claimed Off Waivers By Reds

The Cincinnati Reds claimed Luke Farrell off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and designated Scott Van Slyke for assignment in order to clear room for the right-handed pitcher on their 40-man roster.

The Dodgers acquired Farrell from the Kansas City Royals on July 28 in exchange for cash considerations. He’d been designated for assignment by the Royals four days prior to the trade. Farrell was immediately optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he allowed three runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings in a lone start with the affiliate.

Farrell, the son of Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, has also appeared in 17 games (16 starts) this year with Triple-A Omaha. He went 7-4 with a 4.07 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with Kansas City’s top affiliate.

Farell is a lifetime 24-26 with a 4.27 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 100 games (81 starts) over parts of five Minor League seasons. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut with the Royals this season, allowing five runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work.

Like Farrell with the Dodgers, Van Slyke’s tenure with the Reds comes to an abrupt end. Cincinnati acquired the utility man alongside Hendrik Clementina from Los Angeles at the non-waiver trade deadline in exchange for Tony Cingrani.

Van Slyke was selected by the Dodgers in the 14th round of 2005 Draft. He hit .242/.326/.417 with 44 doubles, 29 home runs and 95 RBIs in 355 games over parts of six seasons with the club.

Van Slyke went 5-for-41 with six runs, one double, two home runs and three RBI in 29 games with the Dodgers this season. He had one hit, a home run, and two walks in 13 plate appearances over four games with Triple-A Louisville after the trade.
