The Los Angeles Dodgers fell behind early, rallied in the third and fourth innings and pulled away late in their 7-4 win over the Atlanta Braves. Corey Seager and Chris Taylor each collected three hits, while five Dodgers had at least one RBI.
For Taylor, it was his 10th multi-hit effort in 18 games since the All-Star break. Prior to his go-ahead homer in the third inning, Taylor scored the Dodgers’ first run of the game.
He and Seager combined for back-to-back singles to put two on with nobody out in the third inning. Justin Turner followed with a walk to load the bases and after striking out Cody Bellinger, Sean Newcomb walked Logan Forsythe to bring in the tying run.
The walk was one of a career-high seven Newcomb handed out over 4.2 innings. Newcomb walked five in six innings when he faced the Dodgers last month.
Luke Jackson stranded the inherited baserunners in the fifth inning, but Jason Hursh allowed the Dodgers to extend their lead in the sixth. Taylor legged out an infield single, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, advanced to third base on Seager’s single and scored on Justin Turner’s sacrifice fly.
Kiké Hernandez pulled an RBI single into left field in the seventh inning, and a run scored when Yasiel Puig grounded into a double play. Austin Barnes’ RBI double in the ninth was the final bit of scoring for the Dodgers.
Alex Wood rebounded from a poor showing the last time he faced his former teammates to turn in a quality start. Wood’s outing did begin on a rocky note, as Freddie Freeman’s two-out single in the first inning led to a run.
Hernandez was unable to cut off Tyler Flowers’ drive to the gap and the ball rolled to the wall for an RBI double. Wood worked around a one-out double and wild pitch in the second inning and escaped trouble in the fifth and sixth.
The Braves loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning behind consecutive walks and an Ender Inciarte flare single into left field. Wood picked off Lane Adams at second base, which was upheld after a Braves challenge, and then induced Brandon Phillips into a double play.
Nick Markakis doubled with two outs and Johan Camargo reached on a Forsythe error that left runners at the corners. Wood picked up his defense by striking out Sean Rodriguez to end his night on an efficient 87 pitches.
Brandon Morrow and Josh Fields combined for four strikeouts over two scoreless innings. Tony Cingrani endured a rough debut with the Dodgers as he allowed consecutive singles in the bottom of the ninth, threw a wild pitch, then surrendered a three-run home run.
The homer was Ozzi Albies’ first hit of his career. Cingrani managed to settle in from there, retiring the next three batters faced.
The Dodgers came away with a 32nd come-from-behind win this season and ensured their last series loss came June 5-7 when the Washington Nationals took two of three games at Dodger Stadium.
