The American League and National League initial rosters for the 2017 MLB All-Star Game were announced, which has the Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, New York Yankees and Washington Nationals tied for the lead with five selections. The Astros and Nationals lead with three starters each.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had four All-Star selections in Cody Bellinger, Kenley Jansen, Clayton Kershaw and Corey Seager. Bellinger is the first Dodgers position player to make the All-Star Game in his first season. Justin Turner was named among the five Final Vote candidates to make the NL roster.
The reigning world champion Chicago Cubs are without a starter, after having four last year. They’re the first team since the San Diego Padres went from five to one starter in the 1985 and ’86 All-Star Games to have a drop-off of four starters.
Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper led all players with 4.5 million votes. New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge led the AL with 4,488,702 votes. Judge is the first Yankees rookie position player to make the All-Star Game since Hideki Matsui in 2003.
Each All-Star roster will ultimately be comprised of 32 players; 20 position players and 12 pitchers. Of the selections announced Sunday, 23 are first-time All-Stars, 16 are second-timers, and 30 of the players are 27 years old or younger.
The 2017 All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, July 11, at 5 p.m. PT at Marlins Park. It will be exclusively televised by FOX.
