Los Angeles Dodgers second base prospect Willie Calhoun, who currently plays for Triple-A Oklahoma City, launched a towering home run to the upper deck in right field in the third inning of Saturday’s game against Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers affiliate).
Entering play Sunday, Calhoun had hit a home run in Oklahoma City’s past three games. It’s the second time in Calhoun’s career he’s accomplished as much, with the first coming May 16-19. The 22-year-old has hit 13 home runs this season.
All have come since April 25, which is tied for second-most in the Pacific Coast League during that span. In addition to hitting the ball out of the stadium, Calhoun has hit safely in six of the past seven games heading into Sunday.
He’s gone 9-for-30 with two doubles, two triples, three home runs, eight runs scored and 10 RBI over that stretch. Calhoun is batting .292/.339/.548 and has 31 RBI on the season. Should he continue at this torrid pace, the fourth-round pick from the 2015 Draft presumably will join the Dodgers once active rosters expand.
In addition to Calhoun, Dodgers center fielder Joc Pederson also hit a home run in Saturday’s win for the second consecutive day. Pederson, Calhoun and Scott Van Slyke combined for back-to-back-to-back home runs.
Through two games of his rehab assignment with OKC, Pederson is 2-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBI. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list for concussions May 25 after a collision with Yasiel Puig on May 23.
