Kyle Farmer of the Tulsa Drillers became the latest Los Angeles Dodgers prospect to receive recognition, with the versatile backstop named Texas League Player of the Week for games played May 8-14.
Farmer joins Drillers teammate Edwin Rios in taking home Texas League honors this season. Leo Crawford of Low-A Great Lakes was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week earlier this month, and DJ Peters and Mitchell White of High-A Rancho Cucamonga have received California League honors.
Farmer went 12-for-20 in five games during the week he was recognized, batting .600/.640/.750 with three doubles, five RBI and four walks. Overall this season, he’s hitting .314/.402/.410 with seven doubles, one home run and 11 RBI in 28 games.
The 26-year-old was selected by the Dodgers in the eighth round of the 2013 Draft. Farmer was previously taken by the New York Yankees in the 35th round in 2012, but elected to attend the University of Georgia.
Prior to this year, Farmer spent much of last season and a significant portion of 2015 with the Drillers. Farmer went into this season rated the No. 34 prospect in the organization heading into this season.
To prevent potentially losing Farmer in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft, the Dodgers added Farmer to their 40-man roster. In addition to catching during Spring Training, Farmer also played three games at third base.
