Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andrew Toles will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. He was removed during the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game, after crashing into the short fence in right field on a failed catch attempt.

It was not the collision that resulted in the injury, but instead Toles landing awkwardly on his right knee. Toles remained down on the ground while being checked on by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and a trainer.

Toles eventually rose to his feet and walked off the field under his own power. An x-ray on Toles’ right knee came back negative, but the Dodgers were concerned he may have sustained an ACL injury, which prompted Wednesday’s MRI exam.

Recovery from ACL surgery is typically six to nine months, which all but eliminates Toles from potentially returning this season. He’s expected to have the procedure in two weeks.

Los Angeles loses their primary leadoff hitter and a significant contributor. Toles platooned with Franklin Gutierrez and others in left field this season, and also started six games in center field.

Over 31 games (19 starts), Toles batted .271/.314/.458 with three doubles and 15 RBI in 31 games (19 starts). He tied for second on the team with five home runs.

Rising through the Dodgers farm system last season to make his MLB, the speedy outfielder hit .314/.365/.505 with nine doubles, one triple three home runs and 16 RBI. Toles capped off his remarkable year by starting in left field in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.
