After splitting a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium last week, the Los Angeles Dodgers endured a frustrating loss at Chase Field on Friday night.
The Dodgers got off to a quick start, with Joc Pederson, who celebrated his 25th birthday, opening the game with a single into center field. Corey Seager followed with a two-run homer that easily cleared the high fence in center field.
The Diamondbacks answered back in the bottom half of the inning, as Alex Wood surrendered a leadoff home run to A.J. Pollock. Taijuan Walker retired the side in order in the second and third innings.
Pollock added to his night with a one-out double in the bottom of the third, and Chris Owings followed with an RBI double to tie the game. Justin Turner led off the fourth with a double, and Yasmani Grandal later walked, but both were stranded.
Wood notched back-to-back strikeouts after allowing a one-out single to Brandon Drury in the bottom of the fourth. Pederson doubled off Walker in the fifth, and Seager followed with a go-ahead single.
Owings grounded into a force out and ended up on second base with two outs because of a Chase Utley throwing error. Paul Goldschmidt was intentionally walked, then a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance. It proved costly as Jake Lamb hit a two-run single before Wood could get out of the inning.
A Granal two-out double led to an Andrew Toles game-tying RBI single that knocked Walker out of the game. Pedro Baez issued back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the sixth, then was in further trouble when a ball got by Grandal.
However, Baez struck out two of the next three batters faced to get out of the inning unscathed. Chris Taylor led off the seventh with a pinch-hit home run, giving the Dodgers a 5-4. Ross Stripling worked appeared to have surrendered a one-out triple to Paul Goldschmidt in the bottom of the seventh.
However, the ball got stuck under the padding of the wall in center field, which prompted Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to challenge the call. Goldschmidt ended up at third one batter later when Toles fielded a fly ball and threw wildly to second base. But Stripling retired Yasmany Tomas to escape the trouble.
A Drury leadoff double and David Peralta single put runners on the corners and knocked Stripling out of the game. The Dodgers caught a bit of a break when Diamondbacks third base coach Tony Perezchica fell down and therefore was not able to wave Drury home.
Luis Avilan entered and promptly walked Chris Iannetta to load the bases. Avilan then walked Daniel Descalso, bringing the tying run in. Sergio Romo was next out of the bullpen, and he was called for a balk.
Romo then walked Owings, and gave up a two-run infield single to Goldschmidt on a line drive that skipped off Chase Utley’s glove. Tomas’ two-run double extended the Diamondbacks’ lead to 10-5.
Romo walked Drury to load the bases, and gave way to Josh Fields. He allowed a two-run single to Iannetta and RBI double to Daniel Descalso before getting out of the inning. Andrew Chafin completed mop-up duty in the ninth inning to finish out the Diamondbacks’ 13-5 victory.
