Dodgers Spring Training Highlights: DJ Peters, Gavin Lux Spark Offense Against Rockies

The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up a second win in as many 2021 Spring Training games, cruising past the Colorado Rockies, 10-0, at Camelback Ranch. Trevor Bauer made his debut but shared the spotlight with Gavin Lux, DJ Peters and several other Dodgers prospects.

Bauer allowed a leadoff single to begin the game, then retired the next six batters to get through his scheduled two innings of work. Bauer struck out a pair of batters in the process, both in the second inning.

He was given a lead prior to officially being removed, as Peters sent a two-run homer onto the berm in left-center field in the bottom of the second inning. Peters kept his personal highlight reel going with a tremendous catch in center field in the third.

L.A. added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning when Will Smith’s two-out double was followed by an RBI single from Matt Beaty.

Singles by Zach McKinstry and Peters then set the table for Lux, who delivered an RBI base hit in the fourth. Peters later scored on a wild pitch, Rangel Ravello hit an RBI double, Smith brought in another run with a single, and Andy Burns tacked on a two-run double.

Omar Estevez capped off the Dodgers’ scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. By then the pitching staff had combined to hold the Rockies to just two hits.

Although Tony Gonsolin was expected to pitch two innings, he only handled the third. Kenley Jansen followed in the fourth and was a swing and miss away from an immaculate inning. Jansen’s ninth pitch was rolled over to first base to complete a quick 1-2-3 inning.

Blake Treinen worked around a walk and base hit in the fifth, and Victor Gonzalez tossed a clean sixth inning. “I think if I can look at one pitcher who’s made such big strides from a year ago, Victor would probably be at the top of the list,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the young lefty.

Lux, McKinstry impress for Dodgers

Lux’s first game of the spring came in the form of a start at second base and batting leadoff. He was clean in the field and finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.

Making his second consecutive start, McKinstry had a hit in one of his two at-bats and played shortstop without any issues.
