Major League Baseball incorporates several traditions and special jerseys and caps through the course of a regular season, and even begins some of them during Spring Training. For the Los Angeles Dodgers, it meant a second consecutive year with an alternate cap featuring a ‘D’ script.
With the season now underway, MLB unveiled a series of uniforms in honor of numerous holiday and season-related celebrations. Once again on the docket are special jerseys and caps for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, 2017 Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.
In a change from years past, players will now wear the special-event uniforms throughout the entirety of the four holiday weekends. First up is Mother’s Day, falling on the weekend of May 12.
That has the Dodgers on the road for a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies that begins two days prior to Mother’s Day. After making their debut last season, MLB has elected to continue on with the uniforms that incorporate pink into the logos.
Each team will be able to select from two different pink socks options. Pink bats, ribbon decals and wristbands, which have been in use since 2006, will also be utilized during the weekend. MLB will once again donate their licensed uniform royalties, with the proceeds from Mother’s Day going towards the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer Foundation.
Next up are uniforms in honor of Memorial Day. Given the change to wearing themed caps and jersey for an entire weekend, it’s plausible the Dodgers will be in green for parts of multiple series.
They host the Chicago Cubs for a three-game series, beginning May 26, and open a road series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Memorial Day.
The Memorial Day uniforms feature a new cap design from New Era, the ninth consecutive season in doing so. Majestic will also work in cohesion with New Era, designing the jerseys to match for the fifth straight year. The 2017 uniforms have a new ripstop woodland camouflage design, with the specialty socks to match.
MLB’s annual league-wide observance of the holiday honors those who lost their lives fighting for their country. Stadiums will participate in the National Moment of Remembrance, with ballparks conducting a moment of silence and pregame ceremonies. The proceeds from the MLB uniforms will be donated to various MLB charities.
The next holiday during the season will be Father’s Day, which lands on Sunday, June 18. During that weekend, the Dodgers find themselves on the road against the Cincinnati Reds for a three-game series.
The Father’s Day designs will once again continue with the same club logos, with light blue incorporated into the uniform. A blue shadow tech heather crown and graphite visor is featured on the caps, while teams will also be able to choose from two different sock styles.
Just like with Mother’s Day, players will don blue ribbons and blue wristbands, which is a product of MLB’s longstanding partnership with the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
