Dodgers News: Kenley Jansen May Reverse Stance On 2017 World Baseball Classic

When rosters were announced for the 2017 World Baseball Classic in February, the Los Angeles Dodgers were represented with several countries. Their strongest presence is with Team Mexico, whose roster includes Adrian Gonzalez, Sergio Romo and Alex Verdugo.

Julio Urias was included on Mexico’s designated pitcher pool, and is eligible to be activated should the team advance beyond pool play. Kiké Hernandez playing for Team Puerto Rico, Rob Segedin is with Italy, and non-roster invitee Ike Davis suited up for Israel.

Like Urias, the Dodgers have another pitcher in Kenley Jansen who may be seen in the WBC. Jansen was included on Netherlands’ designated pitcher pool.

The hard-throwing closer previously said he would not participate in the international tournament, and reiterated that stance, but also left open the possibility should Netherlands reach the semifinals, according to Bill Shaikin of the LA Times:

“I’m not ready for it,” Jansen said. “I’m not playing.” Jansen allowed himself only the slightest of wiggle room, saying he might consider an appearance in the event the Netherlands makes the final four at Dodger Stadium.

After recording a career-high 47 saves and throwing 68.2 innings last season, Jansen was heavily relied on in the postseason. He threw 11.2 innings across seven games, going a minimum of two innings in three appearances.

Dodger Stadium is hosting the semifinals and final of the WBC from March 20-22. By that time Jansen, who has one Cactus League appearance under his belt entering Friday, presumably would have pitched in more games.

While Jansen would step foot on a familiar mound, it would be in unusual attire, as Netherlands’ colors match that of the San Francisco Giants — black and orange. Netherlands won their first two WBC games and are advancing to the second round, along with Israel, out of Pool A.

Jansen was on the Netherlands roster for the 2009 WBC, though at the time he’d yet to convert from catcher.
