With baseball no longer considered an Olympic Sport, the marquee international tournament is the World Baseball Classic. The 2017 WBC began Monday, with Israel edging Korea at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea.
Israel built on their first appearance in the WBC by soundly defeating Chinese Taipei to improve to 2-0 in pool play. The Los Angeles Dodgers are well represented in the tournament, with six players included on the roster of four different countries.
Adrian Gonzalez, as usual, is with Team Mexico, despite reporting to camp last month with tendinitis in his right elbow. He is joined by new Dodgers reliever Sergio Romo, as well as the organization’s outfield prospect, Alex Verdugo.
Kiké Hernandez and Rob Segedin are competing in the WBC for Team Puerto Rico and Italy, respectively, and Dodgers non-roster invitee Ike Davis is with Israel.
Kenley Jansen (Netherlands) and Julio Urias (Mexico) were included in a pitcher pool for their respective country, and are eligible to be added to the active roster should Netherlands or Mexico advance to the second round.
