Dodgers News: Corey Seager Told ‘Lay Low’ Due To Back Issue

The Los Angeles Dodgers were without their starting middle infield throughout the week as Logan Forsythe was allowing a series of lubricating injections to set it, and Corey Seager was nursing a bruised right shin.

There was enough concern that he was sent for X-rays, which came back negative. Forsythe and Seager were in the Dodgers’ split-squad lineup on Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, batting first and second, respectively. It was the first game for both players since Monday.

Seager’s return was short-lived in some regard, as he not only was out of the lineup on Saturday but was also limited during workouts at Camelback Ranch due to an upper-back issue, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

Seager, who returned to Cactus League action on Friday after missing three days with a right shin bruise, was told to “lay low” on Saturday and not swing a bat, manager Dave Roberts said. Roberts said the injury didn’t occur on a swing but “on a throw or awkward movement.”

It’s unclear when Seager suffered the injury, though an athletic, off-balance throw to complete a double play in the fifth inning on Friday may be to blame.

Seager is 0-for-5 with one walk and one strikeout over three Cactus League games thus far. He hit .350/.350/.450 with two doubles and one RBI in eight games last spring. Seager that year missed some Cactus League action because of a mild left knee sprain.

The Dodgers figure to have plenty of opportunities to get their 22-year-old shortstop at-bats this year, as the World Baseball Classic has made for an elongated Spring Training. The Dodgers’ final exhibition game is Saturday, April 1, when they face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Dodger Stadium.
