The Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation are hosting a pair of turkey giveaways on Tuesday, with the first taking place at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif. (901 E. Artesia Blvd.).
The Dodgers and LADF are joining Compton Mayor Aja Brown, multiple Councilmembers, Senator Isadore Hall, III and Progress California’s 12th annual Turkey Giveaway and Health Fair, with the event taking place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
LADF staff and Dodgers Alumni Al Ferrara and Dennis Powell will be participating in the meal distribution and sign autographs. The event will include family-friendly activities and Dodgers giveaways.
The parties involved are combining to provide 10,000 free turkeys to underserved families in Compton and surrounding communities on a first-come first-served basis at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.
Plus, representatives will provide blood pressure and diabetes tests and share information on insurance enrollment at no cost. Participants will also receive information on healthy eating during the holidays to raise awareness of obesity.
Covered California will provide information and provide assistance on signing up for free or low-cost health insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Then from 2:00-5:00 p.m. PT on Tuesday, the Dodgers and LADF will host the 12th annual Community Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway at Dodger Stadium in partnership with Ralphs/Food 4 Less.
Ron Cey, Eric Karros and Charley Steiner will aid in the distribution of a complimentary turkey, fixings and reusable canvas bags to 1,200 pre-selected families and not-for-profit community organizations, who will then distribute them to Los Angeles-area families in need.
Turkeys and fixings are also being provided to pre-selected students in the Dodgers’ “Community of Schools,” which is a strategic community partnership to improve the education and wellness of children attending local schools and living in communities surrounding Dodger Stadium.
Families from LADF’s youth baseball and softball program Dodgers RBI (Reviving Baseball In Inner Cities) were also pre-selected to receive turkeys and fixings.
“As we approach the holidays, most of us start dreaming of huddling around fires and feasts, even in sunny southern California,” Dodgers vice president of external affairs and community relations Naomi Rodriguez said.
“But there are so many families in the Los Angeles area who cannot afford to give their families this holiday dream. The Dodgers look forward to giving turkey dinners to families every Thanksgiving. It’s one of the many ways we say thank you to our city.”
The Dodgers partnered with the offices of Mayor Eric Garcetti, Senator Kevin de León, Councilmember Gil Cedillo, Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez and Congressman Xavier Becerra for the turkey giveaway at Chavez Ravine.
