The Los Angeles Dodgers’ contest against the Colorado Rockies on Friday night was overshadowed by the pregame on-field ceremony to honor Vin Scully.
The tribute kicked off Vin Scully Weekend at Dodger Stadium, which is filled with special mementos. Festivities began with a video tribute narrated by Bob Costas, and the event was emceed by Dodgers broadcaster Charley Steiner.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Hall of Famer Jaime Jarrín, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, Dodgers chairman Mark Walter and Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax are among those on hand to speak. Scully is joined on field by his wife, Sandra.
Dodgers chairman Mark Walter announced during the ceremony that Scully will join the “ring of honor” (retired numbers) at Dodger Stadium next season.
The Dodgers will distribute a 39-millimeter solid bronze Scully limited-edition commemorative coin coin being distributed to the first 50,000 fans in attendance on Saturday.
The celebratory weekend concludes Sunday with the first 50,000 fans in attendance receiving a commemorative edition of Dodger Insider magazine celebrating the life and career of Scully.
Scully is in the midst of calling his final games at Dodger Stadium. He’ll put the finishing touches on a remarkable career when the Dodgers face the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park from Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
