The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up a game on the San Francisco Giants with their victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, and looked to extend their winning streak to five games while also taking the series at Chase Field.
Archie Bradley induced a pair of quick fly outs before walking Justin Turner to keep the first inning alive. It didn’t hurt the right-hander as Adrian Gonzalez grounded out to end the inning. There was then a 10-minute delay after Brandon McCarthy’s second pitch struck home plate umpire Dale Scott on his mask.
He was tended to by a Diamondbacks trainer for a couple minutes before coming out of the game. Play resumed after an 11-minute delay and with the umpire crew one member short. McCarthy proceeded to retire the side in order, including Michael Bourn and Paul Goldschmidt by way of strikeout.
Yasmani Grandal drew a leadoff walk and Howie Kendrick lined an infield single off Jean Segura’s glove to give the Dodgers two on with no outs in the second inning. Yasiel Puig and Andrew Toles both hit into a force out, which stymied any momentum that started to build.
Bradley complete a scoreless inning of work by getting called strike three on McCarthy. Jake Lamb led off the bottom of the second with a double that hit off the fence in left field. He advanced to third base on a grounder to the right side but was stranded.
Chase Utley hit a leadoff double in the third inning and after being moved to third base, scored on Turner’s flare single into right field. Nick Ahmed led off the bottom of the third with an infield single but was then picked off first base.
McCarthy struck out Bradley and Segura to give him five strikeouts through three scoreless innings. A Kendrick single to center in the fourth was followed by a Puig fly out and Toles hitting into a force out.
Toles was awarded second base on a balk call, where he was stranded by McCarthy. Goldschmidt singled with one out in the bottom of the fourth but was caught stealing soon after. Lamb then grounded out to end the inning.
Bradley worked around a Seager one-out double in the fifth to keep the Dodgers’ lead at 1-0. Yasmany Tomas nearly tied the game in the bottom of fifth as his deep fly ball was caught by Toles in front of the fence in right-center field.
McCarthy then picked up his second strikeout of the inning as he again retired the side in order. Kendrick doubled high off the wall in center field to give him a third consecutive three-hit game.
Toles was intentionally walked to put two on with two outs for McCarthy, who grounded to third to end the inning. McCarthy got through six innings for the first time this season, doing so without allowing a run and with eight strikeouts.
Zac Curtis walked Turner with two outs in the seventh and gave up a base hit to Gonzalez. Curtis was replaced by Jake Barrett, who walked Grandal to load the bases. Kendrick was unable to capitalize as he struck out on a pitch in the dirt. Los Angeles at that point dropped to 1-for-13 on the night with runners in scoring position.
Adam Liberatore came on in the bottom of the seventh and struck out Bourn and Goldschmidt. He then got Lamb to hit into the shift to complete a quick 1-2-3 inning. Joe Blanton worked around a two-out walk and base hit in the eighth to keep the Dodgers’ 1-0 lead intact.
Kenley Jansen gave up a single to Bourn with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Goldschmidt fouled out on a pitch that was left over the plate, and soon after Bourn stole second base with two outs.
Jansen made another mistake with pitch location and it cost him as Lamb tied the game with an RBI double to left-center field. The blown save was Jansen’s fourth this season, all of which have come on the road to a National League West opponent.
Kendrick was stranded in the 10th inning after lining a two-out single into center field. The four-hit game was his third of the season and first since May 22. Pedro Baez bookended a scoreless bottom of the 10th with strikeouts.
Scott Van Slyke pulled a pinch-hit single into left field with one out in the 11th, only to be backpicked at first base with Utley at the plate. Van Slyke was initially ruled safe but a quick challenge overturned the call. Utley was then called out on strikes to end the inning.
Louis Coleman worked his way through the top of the Diamondbacks’ lineup without issue, striking out Bourn and Goldschmidt in the process. Seager led off the 12th with a chopper up the middle that carried into center field.
He then advanced to second base, still with no outs, on an Enrique Burgos wild pitch. However, Seager ran into an out as Ahmed fielded Turner’s grounder and threw to third base. Grandal and Kendrick walked to load the bases with two outs.
Randall Delgado fell behind in the count, 3-1, before getting Puig to ground out to end the inning. Lamb tripled off Casey Fien to start the bottom of the 12, which prompted the Dodgers to intentionally walk the bases loaded.
Kendrick moved in from left field to give the Dodgers a five-man infield, but it was to no avail as Drury shot a walk-off single into right.
