The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Milwaukee Brewers and earned the series victory with their walk-off victory on Sunday. With Tyler Thornburg struggling to locate the strike zone, Yasmani Grandal worked a walk to bring in the winning run.
It was the second time this season the Dodgers have been involved in a walk-off walk, and third in the past two seasons. In June 2015, the Dodgers earned a 1-0 victory over the Texas Rangers by drawing a bases-loaded balk.
This season, the San Diego Padres snatched a game from the Dodgers when Yangervis Solarte drew a bases-loaded walk off Chin-hui Tsao.
Adding a little more to the rather unique ending, Grandal entered the game as a pinch-hitter after Howie Kendrick worked a walk to load the bases. “I know Yasmani against a right-hander can really conduct an at-bat, hit a gap, get a base hit and maybe draw a walk,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Through 30 games played this season, the switch-hitting catcher is batting just .184/.309/.340 with eight doubles, five home runs and 23 RBIs. While Grandal has yet to eclipse a .300 batting average in a season, his averages across the board this season are significantly lower than expected.
