Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu is continuing his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Ryu is scheduled to start for the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Wednesday.
The southpaw joins OKC after making a pair of rehab starts with High-A Rancho Cucamonga. In Ryu’s first outing he threw 22 pitches over two scoreless innings. He then tossed 44 pitches over three innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits, including two home runs.
Ryu came away pleased after the start, citing growing confidence and improvement in command of his pitches. It should be noted Ryu isn’t yet throwing at maximum effort as he reacquaints himself to starting every five days.
Thus far, Ryu’s fastball has hovered in the upper-80s, which is down from the low 90s fastball he flashed in 2013 and 2014 with the Dodgers. Ryu’s May 15 start with the Quakes was his first time pitching in a game since a Cactus League start on March 17, 2015.
Assuming Ryu doesn’t have any setbacks in his recovery, he’ll likely throw four innings on Wednesday, and continue to build his innings in subsequent starts with Oklahoma City. Ryu was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 7 when Casey Fien was claimed off waivers.
The move didn’t affect Ryu’s timeline and June 4 remains the earliest date he can be reinstated from the DL. Ryu is in the fourth of a six-year, $36 million contract.
