In what has been an eventful offseason, the Los Angeles Dodgers were able to retain two of their key free agents, bringing back Blake Treinen and Justin Turner on multi-year contracts.

Looking ahead to this winter, the organization will have another important decision to make with Clayton Kershaw. The longtime Dodgers ace is set to reach free agency for only the second time in his career.

Following the 2018 season, Kershaw and the Dodgers worked together on what eventually became a three-year, $93 million contract extension. It was after the left-hander exercised the opt-out clause included in the seven-year deal he signed prior to the 2014 season.

With the start of Spring Training approaching, some have wondered whether the Dodgers will look to extend Kershaw before he potentially becomes a free agent at the end of the year. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman noted the two sides have yet to open talks, via Jorge Castillo of the L.A. Times:

Friedman confirmed the organization and Kershaw haven’t discussed a contract extension. He said he understands Kershaw’s desire to do what’s best for his family.

Kershaw recently admitted that he isn’t sure what the future holds, but made clear he will do what’s best for his family. Kershaw lives in Dallas during the offseason and some of have speculated he could look to finish his career with the Texas Rangers.

Focusing on this upcoming season, Kershaw is looking to build off an excellent 2020 campaign that culminated with a World Series championship. He went 6-2 with a 2.16 ERA, 3.31 FIP and 0.84 WHIP in 10 starts.

Kershaw continuing to work on changeup

Kershaw remains committed to adding a changeup to his arsenal and recently revealed he has continued to work on perfecting during this past offseason. However, Kershaw is unsure if he will be comfortable enough to throw it with any regularity this year.
