The Los Angeles Dodgers selected shortstop Bo Lowrance out of Christ Church Episcopal High School in South Carolina with their first pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. Lowrance was drafted by the Dodgers with the No. 40 overall pick.
Lowrance was ranked No. 21 on the top 250 Draft prospects list by MLB Pipeline. Lowrance doesn’t figure to remain at shortstop and could slide over to third base. He’s currently committed to the University of Virginia, which may require the Dodgers to go above slot in order to sign Lowrance.
It marked a second consecutive year the Dodgers’ first selection in the Draft was No. 40 and sixth instance overall. They drafted Zach Root with the No. 40 pick in 2025.
Before Root, the Dodgers had last picked 40th in the 2022 Draft, when they took Dalton Rushing.
Their first selection for 2026 was dropped 10 spots as a penalty for exceeding the second surcharge threshold of the Competitive Balance Tax during the 2025 season. Overall, the Dodgers have just 16 selections in the 2026 MLB Draft.
The Dodgers are making just two picks on Day 1 of the 2026 MLB Draft, with their next selection coming in the fourth round at No. 132 overall.
The No. 40 pick in the 2026 Draft comes with a $2,504,200 slot value. The Dodgers have a bonus pool of $3,951,900 for this year’s draft class, which is the second-smallest among all teams.
Bonus pools are calculated by adding the slot values of every pick a team makes through the first 10 rounds. Any signing bonus amount more than $125,000 for draft picks after the 10th round also count against pool money.
Consequences for exceeding that allotment include a 75% tax on any overage amount that is up to 5% over the pool. If a team goes over the 5% threshold, they will lose their first-round pick in the next draft.
