The 2025 MLB All-Star Week festivities kicked off on Monday as Seattle Mariners’ Cal Raleigh became the first catcher to ever win the Home Run Derby, setting the stage for the Midsummer Classic matchup between the American League and the National League.
The AL is looking to continue its decade-long run of dominance dating back to 2013, as they have won 10 of the past 11 All-Star Game matchups. The NL broke their nine-game losing streak in 2023, but the AL avenged that loss last season with a 5-3 victory at Globe Life Field.
All told, the AL is 48-44-2 against the NL in the annual Midsummer Classic.
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone leads the AL team for the first time in his coaching career.
Tarik Skubal gets the start for the AL after an excellent first half with the Detroit Tigers. He went 10-3 with a 2.23 ERA, 2.01 FIP, 0.83 WHIP and 11.4 strikeouts per nine in 121 innings pitched over 19 starts.
It’s Skubal’s second consecutive All-Star Game selection, after earning his first career nod last season.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is guiding the NL team and named Paul Skenes as the starting pitcher. It is the second consecutive All-Star Game start for Skenes, after he became only the fifth rookie in MLB history to start in the Midsummer Classic last season.
Through 121 innings this year, he owns a 2.01 ERA, 2.40 FIP, 0.92 WHIP and ranks eighth among all pitchers with 131 strikeouts.
The Dodgers have five players selected to the 2025 All-Star Game, including Shohei Ohtani, who is leading off and serving as the NL’s DH. Freddie Freeman is batting cleanup and starting at first base, while Will Smith is batting sixth and starting behind the plate.
Clayton Kershaw and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are the Dodgers’ other two representatives for the All-Star Game. However, Yamamoto won’t participate after starting against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. He was replaced by Andrew Abbott of the Cincinnati Reds.
