2025 Dodgers MLB Draft: Zach Root Picked No. 40 Overall

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected left-handed pitcher Zach Root out of the University of Arkansas with their first pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. Root was drafted by the Dodgers with the No. 40 overall pick.

Root began his collegiate career at East Carolina before transferring to Arkansas. He went 9-6 with a 3.62 ERA for the Razorbacks and earned an All-SEC selection.

The Dodgers don’t make their first selection in the 2025 Draft until Competitive Balance Round A, which technically is part of the end of the first round, due to the pick dropping 10 spots as a result of the team exceeding the second luxury tax threshold during the 2024 season.

Overall, they have four picks on Day 1 of this year’s Draft. In total the Dodgers have 21 picks throughout the duration of the 2025 Draft.

This year marked the fifth time the Dodgers have held the 40th overall pick in the MLB Draft. When they last did so, it was used to take Dalton Rushing in 2022.

The No. 40 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft comes with a $2,443,600 slot value. The Dodgers have a bonus pool of $9,031,300 for the 2025 Draft, which is 24th among all teams.

Bonus pools are calculated by adding the slot values of every pick through the first 10 rounds. Any signing bonus amount more than $125,000 for draft picks after the 10th round also count against the pool money.

Consequences for exceeding that allotment include a 75% tax on any overage amount that is up to 5% over the pool. If a team goes over the 5% threshold, they will lose their first-round pick in the next draft.
