The 2025 college football season kicked off Saturday with a limited number of teams in action, headlined by No. 22 Iowa State facing No. 17 Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland.
Thursday is going t bring about more games before the season begins in earnest Sept. 1. The University of Missouri starts their season on Aug. 28 with a non-conference home game against Central Arkansas.
That is of some interest for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as Sam Horn, one of their 2025 MLB Draft picks, is in the running to start at quarterback for the Tigers.
According to Heather Dinich of ESPN, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz is planning to play Horn and Beau Pribula in their season opener in order to help make a decision on the QB competition:
“I informed the team this afternoon that both quarterbacks will play in the first game,” coach Eli Drinkwitz said in a statement. “I want to see them in a game-day situation to make a final determination.”
Horn missed the entire 2024 season — both in football and baseball — due to recovering from Tommy John surgery. He enters this season for the Tigers having only played in four career games from 2022-2023. He was a four-star football recruit for the 2022 class.
Horn was drafted by the Dodgers in the 17th round and received a $497,500 signing bonus. The 21-year-old was ranked 128th in MLB Pipeline’s prospect rankings for the 2025 MLB Draft.
He’s competing this fall with Pribula, who transferred to Missouri from Penn State. Pribula was a backup to Drew Allar last season, and completed 26 of 35 pass attempts for 275 yards, five touchdowns and one interception last season.
After beginning their season against Central Arkansas, the Tigers see a step up in competition when they host the Kansas Jayhawks on Sept. 6. That’s followed by a matchup with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns before beginning conference play.
Dodgers draft quarterbacks
Horn is the second collegiate quarterback the Dodgers have recently drafted as they previously picked DJ Uiagalelei with their final selection in the 2023 MLB Draft, coming in the 20th round.
Uiagalelei was well traveled in his college football career, playing for the Clemson Tigers, Oregon State Beavers and Florida State Seminoles.
Uiagalelei did not sign with the Dodgers as he continued to pursue a football career. He went undrafted before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers this past April.
