The 2024 MLB Winter Meetings include the Rule 5 Draft that begins at 11 a.m. PT on Wednesday. The annual event is not televised but can be followed online at MLB.com.
Teams had until 3 p.m. PT on Nov. 19 to add players to their 40-man rosters to prevent them from being eligible in the Rule 5 Draft.
The Los Angeles Dodgers protected only one prospect in Jack Dreyer, who originally signed with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2021.
The left-hander went a combined 5-2 with a 2.20 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 46 appearances for Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City this year.
Players signed at age 18 or younger become Rule 5 eligible after five seasons, while those who signed at age 19 or older are eligible within four seasons.
Any player picked during the first round of the Draft must remain on the selecting team’s Major League roster for the entire season or be offered back to the previous club.
If they are offered back, the original team may choose to take them back or allow the selecting organization to keep them.
Picks in the Rule 5 Draft are in reverse order from that year’s standings. Selecting teams pay $100,000 to the club from which a player was taken from. Teams are not required to make a selection.
There is also a Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. Any player not protected on a big league or Triple-A roster is eligible, with selecting teams required to pay $24,000.
Players selected in the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft aren’t subject to any roster restrictions with their new organizations.
Cooper Bowman (Athletics), Christian Franklin (Chicago Cubs) and Yujanyer Herrera (Colorado Rockies) are among the notable prospects eligible to be picked.
Dodgers Minor Leaguers to track in the Rule 5 Draft are Austin Gauthier (No. 24 prospect), Jake Vogel and Damon Keith.
