The 2024 MLB All-Star Game at Globe Life Field is going to feature a wide range of talent, including Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani and other veterans, plus an infusion of youngsters that includes the Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz.

De La Cruz was named to his first All-Star Game roster, receiving the nod as a reserve selection for the National League team.

The 94th Midsummer Classic features 32 players who have received their first All-Star selection, and for players like De La Cruz, he’s looking forward to suiting up alongside Ohtani.

De La Cruz’s anticipation to playing with Ohtani as an All-Star teammate has amounted to efforts to learn Japanese so they can communicate, per Len Hochberg of MLB.com:

“I’m learning Japanese to talk to Shohei,” De La Cruz responded when asked that question on Sunday after being named to the team.

De La Cruz has admired the caliber of player Ohtani is, dating back to last season when he was still with the Los Angeles Angels.

Learning a bit of what would be his third language, De La Cruz is paying homage to one of, if not the biggest, marquee names in baseball. Sitting just behind Ohtani in total fWAR standings, the pair are among baseball’s most valuable players.

All-Star Elly De La Cruz

De La Cruz is making his presence known with his unbelievable athleticism, raw power and cannon arm. His offensive production is all the more impressive when considering the lack of protection in the Reds’ lineup.

The 22-year-old switch-hitter made his MLB debut in 2023 and has taken huge leaps now in his second season.
