Respective All-Stars Marcell Ozuna and Bobby Witt Jr. were added to the 2024 Home Run Derby field, bringing the number of official participants to five.
Three of those hail from the National League while only two American League players have been named to the Home Run Derby at Globe Life Field thus far.
Ozuna, a three-time All-Star, is in the Home Run Derby for the first time. He’s the 11th different Atlanta Braves player to compete in the Derby and is aiming to become their first winner. Overall, the Braves have had a participant 14 years in Home Run Derby history.
Dale Murphy (1985), Ozzie Virgil (1987), David Justice (1993), Fred McGriff (1994), Chipper Jones (1997-1998, 2000), Javy Lopez (1998), Gary Sheffield (2003), Andruw Jones (2005), Freddie Freeman (2018) and Ronald Acuña Jr. (2019, 2022) make up the Braves’ history in the Home Run Derby.
Witt is the fourth player in Royals franchise history to ever participate in the Derby. The former No. 2 pick looks to become the first Kansas City player to win the competition in his first time being part of the event.
Previous Royals to take their swings in the Derby are Bo Jackson (1989), Danny Tartabull (1991), Mike Moustakas (2017) and Witt’s current teammate Salvador Perez (2021).
Meanwhile, Witt pairs with Baltimore Orioles All-Star Gunnar Henderson to make it 10 different shortstops who have participated in Home Run Derby history. The group includes former Dodgers All-Star Corey Seager when he competed in 2016 at Petco Park.
