The Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies both pulled off postseason upsets are now are set to meet in the National League Championship Series, which begins at Citizens Bank Park on Monday night.
The Diamondbacks are in the NLCS for the first time since 2007, when they were swept by the Colorado Rockies. Arizona began their 2023 MLB postseason run as third Wild Card team after slipping in the standings during the final days of the regular season.
That amounted to facing the Milwaukee Brewers as an underdog the Wild Card Series, which the Diamondbacks swept on the road. Their momentum continued with a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series despite continuing to face long odds.
Now the Diamondbacks face another Wild Card team in the Phillies for the first postseason meeting between the two teams. Arizona is on a five-game postseason winning streak while Philadelphia is fresh off eliminating the Atlanta Braves for a second consecutive October.
The Phillies split at Truist Park and rebounded from blowing a lead in Game 2 by notching back-to-back wins at home to wrap up their NLDS win.
Since getting off to a slow start this season, the Phillies rebounded once Bryce Harper returned from Tommy John surgery and played at a 100-win pace. Their playoff run began with sweeping the Miami Marlins in the Wild Card Series. The Phillies are eyeing a second consecutive NL pennant and World Series appearance.
Philadelphia won four of seven games against the Diamondbacks this season.
The 2023 NLCS schedule follows a 2-3-2 format. Thus, the Diamondbacks could at most play three games at Chase Field. The NLCS schedule also includes traditional off days after Game 2, and potentially Game 5 as well.
