The 2023 MLB Winter Meetings conclude Wednesday with the Rule 5 Draft that begins at 11 a.m. PT. The annual event is not televised but can be followed online at MLB.com.
Teams had until 3 p.m. PT on November 14 to add players to their 40-man rosters in order to prevent them from being eligible in the Rule 5 Draft.
Players signed at age 18 or younger become Rule 5 eligible after five seasons, while those who signed at age 19 or older are eligible within four seasons.
The Los Angeles Dodgers added Nick Frasso, Landon Knack and Hunter Feduccia to their 40-man roster to protect them from potentially getting selected by another organization in this year’s Rule 5 Draft.
Any player picked during the first round of the Draft must remain on the selecting team’s Major League roster for the entire season or be offered back to the previous club. If they are offered back, the original team may choose to take them back or allow the selecting organization to keep them.
That occurred with the Dodgers this past season as Gus Varland was returned by the Milwaukee Brewers.
MLB Rule 5 Draft 2023 order
Picks in the Rule 5 Draft are in reverse order from that year’s standings. Selecting teams pay $100,000 to the club from which a player was taken from. Teams are not required to make a selection.
Tanner Burns (Cleveland Guardians), Blaine Crim (Texas Rangers) and Shane Drohan (Boston Red Sox) are among the notable prospects eligible to be picked.
Dodgers prospects to track in the Rule 5 Draft are Kendall Williams (who was part of the 2023 Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game), José Ramos (No. 19 prospect), Alec Gamboa, Yeiner Fernandez (No. 26), John Rooney, Braydon Fisher, Ryan Ward, Jerming Rosario, Carlos Duran and Edgardo Henriquez.
