Major League Baseball held its first ever Draft Lottery on Tuesday night at the Winter Meetings in San Diego, California. As part of the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the first six picks in the 2023 MLB Draft were awarded to teams through a lottery system.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, after finishing 62-100 this past season, secured the No. 1 overall pick. The rest of the top six is comprised of the Washington Nationals, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics.

The Pirates, Nationals and Athletics had the best chances to land the No. 1 selection by virtue of having the three worst records (16.5% each). While Pittsburgh and Washington came out with the top two selections, Oakland fell to No. 6.

The Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals also slipped in the 2023 MLB Draft, based on their records from this past season. As for teams that beat the odds, the Tigers, Rangers and Twins all landed better picks based on their respective percentage of earning the No. 1 overall.

The remaining non-playoff teams in the lottery that didn’t land in the top six will pick in the first round based on reverse order of their record from the 2022 season.
