Major League Baseball announced plans for the inaugural Draft Lottery, which will be held on Tuesday, December 6, from the Winter Meetings in San Diego, California. Exclusive coverage of the event will be provided by MLB Network.
As part of the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the first six picks are being awarded to teams via the lottery. All clubs that did not qualify for the postseason this year and still have a first-round pick are eligible for the 2023 MLB Draft lottery.
The Washington Nationals (55-107), Oakland Athletics (60-102) and Pittsburgh Pirates (62-100), who finished with the three worst records in baseball this year, each have a 16.5% chance to receive the top overall selection in the 2023 MLB Draft.
The Cincinnati Reds (13.2%) and Kansas City Royals (10.0%) are the only other teams with double-digit odds of winning the lottery.
The rest of the group is comprised of the Detroit Tigers (7.5%), Texas Rangers (5.5%), Colorado Rockies (3.9%), Miami Marlins (2.7%), Los Angeles Angels (1.8%), Arizona Diamondbacks (1.4%), Chicago Cubs (1.1%), Minnesota Twins (0.9%), Boston Red Sox (0.8%), Chicago White Sox (0.6%), San Francisco Giants (0.5%), Baltimore Orioles (0.4%) and Milwaukee Brewers (0.2%).
The 2023 MLB Draft lottery results will be revealed on MLB Network during a half-hour special beginning at 5:30 p.m. PT on December 6, with hosts Greg Amsinger, Dan O’Dowd and Harold Reynolds. MLB Network has provided live coverage of the Draft every year since 2009.
MLB Draft Lottery was sticking point in CBA negotiations
As MLB and the Players Association (MLBPA) held CBA negotiations last offseason, the Draft Lottery seemingly was a sticking point for a deal. The league originally pushed for a system that would determine only the first four selections, but eventually agreed on six.
