2023 MLB All-Star Game Roster: Pirates Closer David Bednar Named National League Replacement For Clayton Kershaw

Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar was named the National League injury replacement for Clayton Kershaw in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

Kershaw was among five Los Angeles Dodgers players who made the NL roster, but he’s unable to participate due to being placed on the 15-day injured list because of left shoulder soreness. Kershaw had previously received a cortisone injection to treat shoulder inflammation.

He was hopeful to remain on the active roster and simply be pushed back from his scheduled start Monday, but the Dodgers could not afford him such luxury.

“Ideally, I wish I could’ve skipped a start and made the next one, but that’s not where we’re at with our pitching,” Kershaw said.

“Sometimes roster decision take precedent, and I understand that. Once again, frustrating, disappointing. Shoulder does feel better now, so it’s trending upward. I feel confident I’ll be ready after the break. Just try to find stuff to do for the next week, I guess.”

Even with Kershaw not being able to pitch, the five Dodgers All-Stars is good for third-most this year. Only the Atlanta Braves (eight) and Texas Rangers (six) have more All-Star representatives heading to Seattle.

Meanwhile, Bednar is poised to accompany teammate Mitch Keller in representing the Pirates in the 93rd Midsummer Classic. Bednar ranks third in the NL with 16 saves this season.

The All-Star Game selection is Bednar’s second in a row.

David Bednar chosen over Evan Phillips

Once it became clear Kershaw would no longer be on the NL roster, there was some thought Evan Phillips would be named his injury replacement. Phillips has enjoyed another stellar season, but is somewhat lacking in the saves category — with 12 — that typically garner relief pitchers All-Star selections.
