2023 MLB All-Star Game Preview: Complete National League And American League Rosters

With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. kicking off the festivities on Monday night by winning the Home Run Derby, the attention now turns to the clash between the American League and the National League in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park.

The AL is looking to win its 10th straight All-Star Game against the NL. All time, the AL is 47-43 against the NL in the Midsummer Classic.

Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker returns for the second straight season to lead the AL and he chose New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole to start the game. For Cole, it is his sixth All-Star selection, and he is the first Yankees pitcher to start the Midsummer Classic since Roger Clemens in 2001, which coincidentally also was held in Seattle.

Cole is 9-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, striking out 123 in 117 innings for the Yankees while being tied for the MLB lead in games started this season.

Rob Thomson of the defending NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies takes the helm for the NL in his first time as an All-Star Game skipper. Thomson named Zac Gallen as the NL starting pitcher.

Gallen also is tied for the lead league in starts, with 19. He brings an 11-3 record with a 3.04 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. His 11 wins are tied for the MLB lead. This is Gallen’s first career All-Star Game selection.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have five All-Stars selected for the game, with three of them voted into the NL lineup.

Freddie Freeman is batting second and playing first base. Mookie Betts is batting third and playing in center field, a position he has not played in 2023, and J.D. Martinez is batting cleanup as the designated hitter. Will Smith was not selected as a starter and will come off the bench, with the Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy getting the start behind the plate.

Clayton Kershaw was also selected but will not play due to left shoulder soreness.

For the second year in a row, Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis is handling the play-by-play duties for the exclusive Fox broadcast.
