2023 Dodgers Draft Pick Jaxon Jelkin Returning To College After Being Taken In 14th Round

The Los Angeles Dodgers made 10 selections on Day 3 of the 2023 MLB Draft, which included taking right-handed pitcher Jaxon Jelkin with the 430th overall pick in the 14th round.

Jelkin went 7-2 in 14 starts for South Mountain Community College this past season, posting a 3.81 ERA with 98 strikeouts and two complete games across 75.2 innings pitched.

Jelkin was considered a tough sign for the Dodgers due to his commitment to the University of Houston, and the 20-year-old confirmed on Twitter that he will continue his college career next season.

Jaxon pitched for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during his freshman season in 2022, and has two years of college eligibility remaining.

All 30 MLB teams have until 2 p.m. PT on Tuesday, July 25, to come to terms with their draft picks. To this point, the Dodgers have reached an agreement with sixth-round selection Bryan González, a high school shortstop out of the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy in Puerto Rico.

If a player has exhausted his collegiate eligibility, he can sign at any time up until one week prior to the next year’s Draft. Furthermore, high school and junior college players selected after the 10th round who attend a two-year college after the Draft can sign with their selecting teams for up to $250,000 until a week prior to the following year’s Draft.

Players drafted from Round 11 on do not count against the bonus pools unless their signing bonus exceeds $150,000. The Dodgers’ bonus pool of $7,274,600 ranks 24th in MLB.

Teams that exceed their bonus pool by 0-5% face a 75% tax on the overage. At higher thresholds, clubs could potentially lose future picks.
