For a second consecutive year, the MLB Draft will take place during All-Star Week, with this year’s event being held in Los Angeles from July 17-19.

The 2022 MLB Draft will feature 20 rounds scheduled across the three days, including the first two rounds, compensatory round(s) and competitive balance rounds on the opening night of the Draft.

Day 2 of the MLB Draft will feature picks in rounds 3 through 10, while the final day will cover rounds 11 through 20.

For the third time in their history and second instance since 2019, the Baltimore Orioles will make the first overall selection. Baltimore drafted catcher Adley Rutschman three years ago, who is currently ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and recently made his MLB debut.

By exceeding the $210 million luxury tax threshold during the 2021 season, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ first pick in the 2022 MLB Draft was moved back 10 spots. The club was originally supposed to choose at No. 30 overall but now won’t make their first pick until 40th.

2022 MLB Draft Combine details

MLB also announced details of the 2022 Draft Combine, with this year’s event taking place at Petco Park in San Diego from June 14-20.

The inaugural Draft Combine in 2021 was held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., and the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, N.C. More than 150 players attended the 2021 Combine, including Henry Davis, who was the No. 1 selection in the 2021 MLB Draft.

The top 300 draft-eligible players, as identified by USA Baseball and MLB teams, will be invited to attend the 2022 Draft Combine, along with up to 30 supplemental invites.

The Draft Combine will provide an opportunity for players to participate in a series of medical and performance assessments as well as educational programming designed to prepare them for careers in professional baseball.

All players will have the chance to participate in a pro-style showcase workout, as well as strength and performance assessments. High school players will also have the option to participate in games against other high school Combine attendees.

The 2022 Draft Combine attendees will benefit from the opportunity to interview with general managers and scouting directors, in addition to an enhanced medical evaluation process.

Participants will additionally have opportunities to be featured on MLB social media channels, as well as receiving personal branding training and access to real-time content for their own platforms.

MLB Network will cover the Draft Combine throughout the week of June 14, with dedicated exclusive coverage live from Petco Park on Thursday, June 16 and Friday, June 17.
