Playing in his first full season as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2022 saw Trea Turner as a pillar in the lineup and the field at shortstop.
In a year that was played as an impending free agent for the first time in his career looming, Turner started 160 games for the Dodgers and notched his second All-Star Game nod while helping the organization set a new franchise record with 111 wins.
As one of the top offensive threats in the game, Turner’s bat at the top of the Dodgers lineup served vitally as he captured a batting line of .298/.343/.466 and set new career highs in doubles (39) and RBI (100). Amongst all qualified shortstops, he had the second-best batting average and was third with an .809 on-base plus slugging percentage.
Turner was among the five Dodgers to receive All-MLB Team honors for 2022.
After going 6-for-18 at the plate in the National League Division series against the San Diego Padres, including two home runs (which helped account for an impressive 1.111 OPS), Los Angeles’ elimination in the postseason officially marked the end of Turner’s tenure with the Dodgers.
He agreed to an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies early into free agency. Turner reflected fondly on his time with the Dodgers, which included thanking fans.

Arguably a highlight every time he takes the field, Turner’s performance in the 2022 season was filled with consistent high levels of play on both offense and defense throughout the entire year (not to mention his still blinding speed).
In a month that saw Turner rank third amongst the NL in hits, July saw him produce a .321 batting average while adding nine doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI.
Included in the scorching month at the plate, was Turner going 2-for-4 with two home runs against the Los Angeles Angels on July 16, securing the Dodgers’ 60th win of the season.
2023 outlook
Now a member of the Phillies, Turner joins the defending NL champions and will surely add another All-Star threat to an already beyond-serviceable lineup.
Although many pundits have offered questions regarding the length of Turner’s deal, which will see his contract extend into his age 40-season, it was reported that this was perhaps a hesitation by the Dodgers in possibly re-signing him.
A former member of the Washington Nationals, Turner rejoins the NL East and will aim to help the Phillies vie for what should be a very tight divisional race.
