Coming off a season in which he appeared in a career-high 21 games (four starts), Mitch White was among the several pitchers the Los Angeles Dodgers relied on throughout the 2022 campaign.
White’s first five appearances for L.A. this year were out of the bullpen, but he then received an opportunity to make regular starts for the team. White became a fixture in the Dodgers rotation all the way through being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays at the deadline.
White was packaged with Alex De Jesus to the Blue Jays for Minor League pitchers Nick Frasso and Moises Brito.
Prior to the trade, the right-hander went 0-2 with a 3.47 ERA over 10 starts. Although White failed to record a win during that stretch, the Dodgers were 5-5 in those starts.
“I like being on a five-day,” White said after his eighth consecutive start. “It’s nice to be out there every fifth day and just keep going.”
Getting traded to the Blue Jays brought relief appearances back into the picture for White, and he also struggled in moving to the American League. Over 10 games (eight starts) to finish the season, White went 0-5 with a 7.74 ERA for the Blue Jays.
He was subsequently left off the Blue Jays’ postseason roster for their Wild Card Series matchup with the Seattle Mariners that resulted in getting swept.
Mitch White 2022 highlight
During a July 6 game against the Colorado Rockies in which runs were at a premium, White carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
White wound up allowing a two-out single to Brendan Rodgers on his 100th pitch, which led to Kris Bryant scoring on a throwing error by Cody Bellinger. His night ended at 5.2 innings, which represented a career high at the time.
The 27-year-old surpassed that mark in his final start with the Dodgers, logging six innings and allowing two runs on nine hits to the Washington Nationals.
2023 outlook
White remains under team control with the Blue Jays, he’ll need to have a strong Spring Training to carve out a role with the team in 2023.
