2020 Padres NLDS Roster: Game 1 Starter Mike Clevinger Included, Dinelson Lamet Left Off Against Dodgers

The San Diego Padres officially announced their 28-man postseason roster for the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which begins Tuesday night at Globe Life Field in Texas.

The was a mild surprise was the inclusion of Mike Clevinger, who missed the Wild Card Series due to an elbow injury. He is one of the Padres’ best starters and will be a big addition if he is healthy enough to give them some length when he takes the mound against Walker Buehler in Game 1.

Clevinger was the Padres’ biggest deadline acquisition, bringing him in on a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Indians. In eight combined starts between the two organizations, he went 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA, 4.15 FIP and 1.15 WHIP while striking out 40 and walking 14 in 41.2 innings.

While they are getting Clevinger back, the Padres will be without one of their other top starters in Dinelson Lamet, who was left off the roster due to an arm injury. Lamet was one of the best pitchers in baseball during a breakout 2020 season, going 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA, 2.48 FIP and 0.86 WHIP with 93 strikeouts and 20 walks in 69 innings across 12 starts.

The Padres didn’t get much length from their starters in the Wild Card round, so it comes as no surprise that they included 15 pitchers on their NLDS roster compared to only 14 for the Dodgers. San Diego used at least eight pitchers in all three of their games against the St. Louis Cardinals.

One of those is lefty Ryan Weathers, who was a first-round draft pick in 2018 but has not pitched above A-Ball. If he makes an appearance in this series, it would mark his MLB debut.

Infielders: Jake Cronenworth, Eric Hosmer, Manny Machado, Mitch Moreland, Fernando Tatis Jr.

Outfielders: Greg Allen, Trent Grisham, Wil Myers, Tommy Pham, Jurickson Profar
